Hello Fresh! (Review and Giveaway!)

Have you heard of Hello Fresh? If you are a sub box junkie, you probably have, but if you have yet to join the subscription box craze sweeping the land lately, you should listen up. How about fresh ingredients and recipes for three meals delivered to your door weekly? All you have to do is follow a few steps and dinner is done in less then 30 minutes. No shopping, no planning, no super skills required. There is a Classic box for omnivores and a Veggie box for herbivores. We tried one of each. The branding is cute (and I'm a sucker for cute branding), and the food arrives nicely organized and cooled by a very funky cooler box. Yes, we kept the cooler box, and the reusable freezer packs inside (hey, I'm thrifty!).

Each box includes labeled bags of ingredients for each meal, and a colorful recipe card with step by step instructions for preparing each meal.
As soon as I open my box, I pile the ingredients for each meal together and pull out anything that won't need refrigeration. Shelf space in my fridge is prime real estate, so I don't shove anything in there unnecessarily. Anything that needs to be cold goes into a large pasta bowl (one for each meal), and I slide them into the fridge in order of how I will cook them. The recipe cards are clipped to the side of my fridge with a magnet, and everything else goes into the pantry at eye level in a little pile. OCD? Perhaps.

Then the fun part, getting cooking. The recipes are very simple, and none take more than 30 minutes, so they are perfect weeknight fare. However, if you are clueless in the kitchen, read carefully. I have noticed that a few of the cards missed small details in the instructions. For example, a chicken meatball dish required cooking chopped scallions and setting them aside, but then they never reappeared in the instructions. The photo of the finished dish on the card actually showed raw scallions as a garnish. I ended up folding my cooked scallions in to the meatballs, so no big deal, but again, if you aren't someone who normally cooks, it could mix you up.

That said, I am not sure advanced cooks would be head over heels for the recipes either. They are healthy, simple recipes, nothing that will stretch your culinary imagination. The Asian Sloppy Joe sauce was simply tomato and soy sauce. I added shredded carrot and zucchini to the onion and garlic included in the box to kick up the veggie component. In the end is was delicious, and Jude scarfed down two huge servings.

All in all, I believe that the best customer for this company is a busy family that is interested in trying something aside from the typical meat and potatoes Americana for dinner, but who isn't so advanced in culinary feats that they'd be bored by fresh ginger and soy. It is amazing if you are short on time, and need something healthy and new.

Sooo, is that you? If so, and you are interested in trying out a Hello Fresh delivery, I have a giveaway for you! I have one Hello Fresh Gift Card worth $25 to get you started!

You may earn up to 4 entries for this giveaway:

Temper Temper (and a Giveaway!)

To all of you who downloaded my digital cookbook, Foodie Baby, thank you! If you haven't, what's stopping you? It's free for Pete's sake! The button is at the top right corner of this blog:)  If you did, I'd love to know what you think of it! You can leave a review on the book or comment here if you have suggestions.

***
My kid is going through a thing right now. A weird veggie thing. As in he won't eat any of them. Actually it isn't just veggies. Fruits, too! One day he'll house a bowl of blueberries, the next we throws them at me. He seemed to love sauteed summer squash, now he turns his nose up at it. Or yells at it while squeezing fits of fury. My mother claims it is because he's had so much yummy variety that he refuses to be bored by the same foods day after day. If that's true, I suppose it's all my own fault, trying to get this kid to be a foodie baby after all.

In the meantime I have had to get creative about including veggies in his diet. Any pureed veggie instantly becomes pasta sauce or quesadilla filling, which seems to do the trick. He also has a weird love for winter squash, even though it's out of season and not that good. But whatever, he's a bit young for the seasonal foods talk, so if he wants to eat acorn squash in June, so be it. Here's my new favorite way to make it. It's barely a recipe, and it's creamy and a bit sweet without adding butter or sugar. Love.

Roasted Acorn Squash with Coconut
Ingredients:
1 small acorn squash
1 heaping tablespoon coconut oil
salt and pepper (optional)

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Slice the squash into quarters and remove seeds. Spray or brush lightly with olive oil and bake for 35-45 minutes or until fork tender. Scoop flesh into a bowl (or a blender if you are preparing this for a littler baby than mine!) and mash with the coconut oil. Season with salt and pepper if desired.

Don't have any coconut oil at home? Not to worry! You can win some! Yup, who doesn't love a giveaway? Tropical Traditions has a huge quart sized jar of Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil for me to give to one of you lucky lovelies. They sent me a jar and the stuff is incredible. I love coconut oil. Delicious, organic, versatile, and I can't wait to whip up some hair tonic with it, too!

To enter, sign up for the Tropical Traditions Newsletter and then leave me a comment. I will choose one winner at random by midnight EST on July 8th. Don't forget to leave me an email address to contact you if you win.

Glee! And a giveaway...

Oh, how I love Glee. That Singing in the Rain/Umbrella Medley was awesome last night! E groans about watching it, but he's not exactly chained to the couch. I think he digs it. But anywho, that's not the Glee I need to tell you about today actually. We need to talk candy.

Glee Gum's Make Your Own Candy Kits to be precise. You may have seen the cute retro gum packaging in stores, but they also make DIY kits. I got the chance to review one of the kits (they offer, gum, chocolate, and gummies) and was so excited when the package arrived. Glee Gum is based in Providence, RI, so it was love at first sight.

The Make Your Own Gummies kit comes with sour mix, colored and flavored sugar, powdered seaweed, seaweed, molding starch, instructions and the story of carrageenan. You're wondering why the hell seaweed is in a candy kit, right? You can read all about it here. It's actually a pretty ommon ingredient in natural food and products. Natural and educational candy? Word.

The kit gives you instructions to make your own mold, which has endless possibilities. Gummies shaped like your favorite toys, your own sculptural designs, whatever! As it was near Halloween, we just used my plastic candy molds and made eyeballs and fingers, so you can use anything you like. The process is incredibly easy, and we had our candy completed in about 20 minutes. The kids dug it, even though Anniebelly made a squinchy sour puss face with every taste and went back for another bite. Sour mix'll do that to ya. Cherry isn't one of my favorite gummy flavors, so I hope they'll start offering others! As for the texture, if you've ever made homemade gels, this is similar. It is not the hard gel of fruit snacks, but softer and more flexible. Very fun to play with, and the mix even reheats to you can just warm it up to pour again if you don't move fast enough the first time.

Overall, this is a fun little activity to get your kids playing in the kitchen and teach them a bit, too. It could even make a fun addition to a holiday gift. You know you want to try. You can order any of the products on the company's website, but guess what?

Glee Gum is giving one of these kits away to you guys! You even get to choose if you want to make gum, chocolate, or gummies. Here are the details:

Happy Fourth Blogiversary to Me! And a Giveaway!

It's that time of year again, peeps! It's September. And four years ago this week I started this blog. Crazy. Last year at this time I babbled on about my early blog posts, which, if you are really bored or bed-ridden thanks to some illness or other, make for some rather funny reading (You can find them in the Archive on the left). Germany was F.U.N.

Last year I hosted a giveaway of the crafty sort to celebrate turning three, but since this blog has evolved into even more of a food centric endeavor, I'm focusing on noshing for this year's giveaway. You lucky buggers!

Your prize package will include:

And Roasted Cock with Leekie Banger Stuffing, which makes me almost pee my pants laughing. And of course, they all include booze. Me likey.

And the winner is...

Congrats to Jessica, the winner of the Yoplait Greek Yogurt Giveaway! I feel a little guilty since she's the only entrant that I actually know in real life, but hey, ya can't fool the random generator! Have fun in Vegas chica, your gift pack is on its way! Thank you so much to everyone who participated and check back soon; I have another foodie friendly giveaway in the works :)

Yo! It's another giveaway!

Ever notice how a food trend picks up speed, beginning humbly in some little chef's kitchen, before rolling through the city, stopping in every gastro-pub, making its mark on food bloggers, and then crash landing and destroying itself on top of some mass market food conglomerate? It happened to "smashed potatoes," it happened to chipotle and wasabi (E was "so over it" when he found wasabi mayo at Wendy's), and now it's moved on to Greek yogurt. I know that Greek yogurt isn't really a trend since people have eaten it for hundreds of years, but you know it's caught on big time when your local Stop n' Shop begins carrying more than just Fage. And you know it's on like Donkey Kong when the big yogurt companies jump on board. I've always bought Fage, and sometimes Chobani if I am looking for the convenience of a smaller, fruit-filled container. Now that Yoplait makes Greek yogurt, I figure the trend is now a food staple.

I was able to test out the Yoplait Greek Yogurt thanks to the Yoplait and MyBlogSpark peeps. Here's what they had to say:

"With 12 grams of protein -- twice that found in leading yogurts-- new YoplaitGreek nourishes from the inside out. Available in four delicious flavors, Strawberry, Blueberry, Honey Vanilla and Plain, the brand´s newest offering has a unique thick and creamy texture with the unmatched taste expected of Yoplait."

Well, I wish I had more of that good news. I tried the plain and strawberry flavors, and E tried the honey vanilla. While the plain yogurt is good, and definitely something I'd use in my cooking (it's fat free, too, woo!), I won't be eating the strawberry yogurt again. It was grainier than I'm used to, very blah in flavor, and when I read the label... Ouch! 18 grams of sugar! I think I'd prefer to stick to my plain yogurt and add my own fruit, thank you very much. For the record, E's response to the honey vanilla was, "eh." I asked him to elaborate and he said the consistency was "weird." I definitely recommend stocking up on the plain yogurt for mixing into smoothies or soups, to make tzatziki, or this awesome Curried Chicken-Salad with Red Grapes and Walnuts. I'll certainly buy it again, as long as it's on sale (remember, I'm sooo cheap).

Now the Yoplait and MyBlogSpark folks were kind enough to send me the yogurt coupons and a gift pack to "Nourish My Inner Goddess," which included a bunch of fun spa goodies. And you can have one, too. Yup, it's giveaway time.

The Prize: A "Nourish Your Inner Goddess" gift pack including 2 coupons for free Yoplait Greek Yogurt, a terry cloth bath wrap, bath sponge, wooden massager, washcloth, brush, and spa slippers.

How to enter: All you need to do is leave me a comment letting me know you're interested. Please don't forget to leave an email address so I can contact you!

Contest ends Friday, April 23rd at midnight EST.

You can also download and print a coupon for the yogurt Here!

One more time...

Phew! I'm back from a 5 day Thanksgiving extravaganza in North Carolina and man, am I tired! 28 hours of driving, way too much food, a little too much wine, and many rounds of LCR later, and all I wanted to do today is nap! Unfortunately, 5 days worth of emails and real life responsibilities have thwarted my attempts at sleeping for 14 hours straight. Thanksgiving was so much fun, but I'm not even going to bother posting food photos or recipes since I'm sure all of you have finished eating up leftovers and have shut the book on Turkey Day until next year. Bring on the December holidays!

I'm already in the Christmas mood thanks to the Regatta in North Myrtle Beach, and lucky you guys, I can help you with your holiday shopping, too! Online Poster Printing has given me a chance to offer you another giveaway in time for the winter shopping season (that is if you didn't finish all of your shopping in the Black Friday madness, you crazy people!).

If you'd like to win, all you need to do is:
1. Leave a comment describing what you will do with your print. Don't forget to leave an email address so that I can contact you if you win!
2. This time, I am offering you the chance to earn up to 2 extra entries, too. Just tweet or blog about this giveaway and link back to me. Congrats!

Sorry it took a few days to write this post! It has been a busy bee kind of weekend!

So without further ado... I'd like to congratulate the winner of my Third Blogiversary Giveaway: Claire! I just can't resist the phrase, "Oh, Snap!" since it is one of my most frequently used exclamations (other than the f word, of course. I curse like a sailor, much to most people's chagrin.) A guarantee that some of you will also be receiving little presents in the mail at some point, since almost everyone who entered is actually a friend in real life or on Craftster. Miss M, I'm keeping an eye on you for OWS Round 700 or whatever we are up to now!

Thanks again to everyone who entered and for reading my little blog of random. Just wait until I have time to write about my David's Bridal experience yesterday :) Classic.

Happy Blogiversary!

No, I'm not picking my nose here.

So Holy Crap. I was scanning through some old posts and realized that it was three years ago this week that I started this blog. Three years ago today I was sitting at a desk in a tiny flat in Friedrichshafen, Germany, jet-lagged, hungry, and spazzing the f out. I can't believe how quickly it all went by, and how distant that person seems from the person I am now. Reading through some of my old posts, I realize now how fun and exciting my life sounded. I was a sarcastic little bugger (what else is new?) but man, was I doing cool shit! My blog has transitioned from a travel heavy fun-for-all to a much more creative outlet, but at least I'm not entirely static. I may party a little less hardy and keep a little closer to home, but at least now I can enjoy my reality TV in English.
Aaaaanyway, I've decided to celebrate my little anniversary with a giveaway in order to thank the three of you who have actually read this ramble-fest. You know those little letters I like to paint? Well, I'd like to make you some! Here are the details:

The prize: A set of letters (up to six) fully painted and embellished by moi.
What to do with them? Choose the name of a child, an inspirational word or phrase, whatever! Hang them up, stare at them, be happy.

How to win:

1. Leave me a comment describing what name, word, or phrase you'd like. I will contact you for color and theme details later. Remember that you can only use up to six letters.
2. Tell me a little story about why you want the letters you chose; I like stories. Maybe you want the word "Free" to remind you of how you ditched some grimy boyfriend and then found yourself. Maybe you want your daughter's name encrusted in glitter because she's a diva. Anything goes! If you need some idea of what I've made in the past, feel free to peruse this flickr set.
3. Don't forget to leave me an email address to contact you if you win!

I will choose a winner based on who has the best story or letter choice, so go to town! The giveaway will end on October 1st and is only open to residents of the continental US. Sorry, but I'm cheap and don't want to deal with ridonculus overseas shipping :) Have fun and good luck to everyone who enters!

Tori and a few tidbits

In case you are not one of my local friends, several of whom were irritated by my incessant bragging the past few weeks, get ready! I was lucky enough to win a pair of tickets to see Tori Amos at the Detroit Opera House this past weekend from my favorite radio DJ, Martin Bandyke. Tori Amos, as in the musical embodiment of my emotional teenage years, stylish, amazing, talented beyond compare and eclectic crazy cool Tori Amos, who somehow, despite my obsession with her, I had never seen in concert! I was thrilled; Eric not so much. Luckily we had dinner with our friends the Robinson's a few nights before the show, inspiring my dear husband's truly selfless and charitable suggestion: "Katja, why don't you go?" Katja dutifully agreed and Girls' Night Out plans were set in motion.

Katja has never been to downtown Detroit and I have never been in the Opera House so it was a fun adventure even without what ended up being one of the greatest live shows I've seen. We had what I thought were great balcony seats, until I saw this lucky duck's photos! (A side note: I'm now in love with Pink is the New Blog! You can go check out more photos and the set list from the show there.) Tori looked fabulous in her hot pink leggings and stilettos, while straddling a piano bench and playing several keyboards at once. Her energy and the power of that voice gave me goosebumps more than once. I was so excited to hear Winter, Icicle, Precious Things, and Caught a Lite Sneeze, but the new songs were equally stellar. If you have not heard the new album yet, get on it! And if you live anywhere near where this tour is headed, go buy tickets now! You will not regret it.

Our evening ended with our meeting the boys at the Berg and heading to Brown Jug for the cheapest beer in Ann Arbor. Lots of young drunks, but if you want a seven dollar pitcher at midnight, you can't go wrong. Snacks next door at Pancheros and home to bed. I'm still humming Body and Soul.

On another note, I need to congratulate the winner of my second giveaway, Cora! Cora has won herself an 18x24" poster print from Large Format Posters. She was lucky, and she was the only person who entered properly! Looking back I see that the sponsors probably need to rethink charging a handling fee for a prize. It seems to be a real turn-off for readers, which I totally understand! Even if it is only five bucks, people don't want to pay for free prizes because then they don't really seem like free prizes at all, do they? Exactly.

Giveaway Time!

Thanks to two much needed and thoroughly enjoyed summer vacations and the recent move into our new home, my blogging has fallen a bit behind! I promise to update soon with some fun new recipes, a couple of DIY projects and a slew of summertime fun photos! Meanwhile, I am excited to announce my second giveaway! Since the first one went so well, I'm hoping for an even better response this time around!

Large Format Posters offers poster printing or custom poster printing on their website. "Here at Large Format Posters, we love photos as much as you do. And we all have plenty of them lying around, right? Well, now is your chance to enlarge that special photo you’ve been wanting to display. The photo can be of anything you want, as long it will make you happy to see it enlarged!"

For this giveaway they are offering a High-gloss or Semi-gloss 18x24" Digitally Printed Poster for you (a $25 value). The printing and shipping is free, however, there are three disclaimers! One, you must have a high resolution photo available for your print, two, there is a $5 handling fee, and three, the giveaway is only open to residents of the U.S. and Canada. If you are unwilling to pay the fee, or do live in the U.S. or Canada, please do note enter the giveaway!

I am considering using my print for another wedding photo, but I can't decide! I don't want our living room to look like a shrine to our wedding! 18X24" is pretty big! Here are some options:

To enter all you have to do is leave me a comment about what picture of your own you would like to have enlarged. For a second entry, leave another comment to let me know which of my photos you think would make the best poster print. And for a third entry, post about this giveaway on your blog with a link back to me. Come back and leave another comment telling me you've done this so I can enter you again! The contest will end August 6th at midnight EST. Best of luck to everyone who enters!

My First Giveaway!

Everyone loves free stuff, especially when the economy is in the crapper and we are all dealing with shrinking budgets. The first things we have to do without are obvious novelty items, but we also have to get creative with gift giving and celebrating on the cheap. While I pride myself on being able to make fabulous parties and presents out of almost nothing, a little help doesn't hurt. That's why I am so excited to get to host my first giveaway, just in time for Father's Day!

UPrinting.com just contacted me with the chance to offer one of their 18″x24″ poster prints for giveaway to one lucky reader, and so here we are! While I haven’t used UPrinting.com’s services for myself yet, a quick scan of their site showed me I likely will be soon. Their greetings cards are so tempting! I’ll be able to order my own 18″x24″ print soon, and I’m so excited! I'll be using mine for a long overdo hanging of our wedding photo! If you visit the UPrinting.com site, you’ll see that they do more than just poster printing and canvas printing: everything from business cards, door hangers, letterhead, and more. Just a note of warning: if you are a paper junkie like me, you may start drooling.

If you’d like to win this 18″x24″ poster print from UPrinting.com, all you need to do is leave me a comment on this post telling me how you’d use a 18″x24″ print. A portrait of you and your dad? Your children and your hubby? Maybe a shot taken at favorite vacation spot or sports venue? For an extra entry, blog about this giveaway (and leave an extra comment with your blog link!), linking back to this post and www.uprinting.com (you must have both links to be valid). Don't forget to leave me your email address so that I can contact you in case you win!

This giveaway will end at midnight (EST) Friday, June 5. The winner will be drawn at random, will be posted here at go ahead and snicker, and will be notified by email.

PLEASE NOTE: per UPrinting’s rules, the 18″x24″ print is only open to residents in the U.S. and Canada!

Good luck to everyone!
p.s. Check out many more giveaways, including the 1st Birthday Carnival over at The Giveaway! Watch out though, stalking the site can be addicting!
